Steven Curtis Chapman has been one of the most prominent performers of contemporary Christian music since the ’80s. Born and raised in Paducah, Kentucky, Chapman learned to play several instruments while hanging out in his father’s music store, excelling at guitar and piano. He moved to Nashville where he began working i a music show. He was also busy writing songs. Although several different labels and music publishers were interested in him by 1987, he decided to sign with the major Christian music company Sparrow. That year he cut his first album, First Hand. He has released many albums and rewarded with several Grammys and Dove Awards.
“I’m very, very grateful to be given the opportunity to make music and share the things that I feel like God has entrusted to me,” Chapman says. “I don’t take it lightly. I pray: ‘God, I want to know You and I want to make You known.”
